AI Visibility & Citation Audit

An AI Visibility Audit That Shows What AI Says About Your Brand

Your buyers now ask AI who to hire, what to buy and which brand to trust. I put those same questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Google AI Overviews, record who gets named and who gets linked, then trace every gap back to the page, signal or setting behind it.

What Is an AI Visibility Audit?

An AI visibility audit measures how often AI platforms mention or cite your brand when people ask about your category, and explains why. It tests real buyer prompts, compares your results with named competitors, and checks the signals that decide whether a model can find and trust your pages.

A traditional SEO audit asks whether Google can crawl and rank your site. An AI citation audit asks something narrower and harder to see: when a model writes the answer, does your name end up in it, and is your page the source it points to?

The Blind Spot

You Can't Fix an AI Search Visibility Gap You've Never Measured

When a prospect Googles your category, you can open the same results page. When they ask ChatGPT, the answer stays in their chat window. It shifts with wording, location and the day, and it may recommend a competitor you've never heard of. Your analytics won't flag it. The prospect simply never arrives.

58%fewer clicks

Ranking first no longer earns the click

Across 300,000 keywords, Ahrefs found the top-ranking page gets a 58% lower click-through rate when an AI Overview appears (Ahrefs, 2026).

2.3xthe clicks

Being cited still pays inside the answer

Seer Interactive measured about 2.1% CTR for pages cited in an AI Overview, against roughly 0.9% for uncited pages on the same results page (Search Engine Land, 2026).

900Mweekly users

Your buyers are already asking

ChatGPT's reported weekly audience as of February 2026, more than double its count a year earlier (WiserNotify, 2026). Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot add millions more.

The answers also move. In March 2026 ChatGPT sharply cut how often it showed sources, then brought citations back by May, according to seoClarity's tracking. Your AI visibility can swing month to month without a single change to your site. A rank tracker sees none of it. It only shows up when someone asks the questions your buyers ask and writes down every answer.

The Method

AI Brand Mentions vs. Citations: Two Numbers I Keep Apart

Most AI visibility reports blend these into one score. I separate them, because each points to a different fix.

  • A mention means the model names your brand in its answer. The model knows you and thinks you're relevant.
  • A citation means the model links one of your pages as a source. Your content was retrieved and trusted enough to back the answer.
Named · not cited

Known, not trusted as a source

The model knows you but builds its answer from someone else's page, often a review site, listicle or Reddit thread.

Fix: content structure and third-party coverage
Named · cited

You own the answer

Your brand is named and your page is the source behind it. This is the state every other quadrant is working toward.

Job: protect it as models update
Not named · not cited

Absent

Neither. This is most often a retrieval problem: blocked AI crawlers, thin topical coverage or almost no footprint beyond your own site.

Fix: crawler access and topical coverage
Cited · not named

Used, not credited

Your page supplies the facts, yet the answer credits no one or recommends a competitor.

Fix: entity and brand signals
What's Included

What My AI Citation Audit Covers

The audit runs in eight layers. The first four show what AI platforms say about you. The last four explain why they say it.

What AI says about you
01

Buyer-Intent Prompt Set

30 to 50 prompts built from your services, locations, sales calls and Search Console queries: category, comparison, problem-led, brand and local questions. You approve the list before testing starts.

02

Cross-Platform Prompt Testing

Every prompt runs across all six platforms, logged with date, location, screenshot, mention, citation and cited URLs. Key prompts run more than once, since one reply from a model is an anecdote. I add Bing's AI Performance report and GA4 AI referrals where you have them.

03

AI Share of Voice vs. Competitors

Up to five competitors go through the same prompts. You see share of voice by platform and prompt type: who owns comparison questions, who owns local ones, and where nobody has a firm hold yet.

04

Brand Accuracy and Sentiment

Outdated pricing, retired products, wrong locations, old leadership names and negative framing borrowed from a single forum thread. These errors are common, and buyers rarely double-check them.

Why it says it
05

Citation Source Mapping

Models lean on a small pool of third-party pages: review platforms, directories, listicles, YouTube, Reddit and trade press. I map which ones drive answers in your category and which have never heard of you.

07

Structured Data and Entity Signals

Organization, Person, Service, Product, FAQ and Article schema, sameAs links, and whether your name, address and description match across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, LinkedIn and Wikidata.

08

Content Extractability

Your 10 to 20 key pages compared against the passages that actually won citations: answer-first paragraphs, question-led headings, specific figures, tables, clear authorship and visible update dates.

The Process

How the AI Visibility Audit Works, Step by Step

The full audit takes 7 to 10 working days from intake to walkthrough.

  1. 01

    30 minutesIntake call

We cover your services, markets, top competitors and the questions your sales team hears most. You share read-only access to Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4 if you have them.

  2. 02

    Days 1 to 2Prompt design and sign-off

I draft the prompt set and send it over. You add, cut or reword anything that doesn't sound like your buyers.

  3. 03

Days 3 to 5Testing and data collection

Every prompt runs across all six platforms for you and your competitors, with first-party AI data pulled alongside.

  4. 04

    Days 6 to 8Diagnosis

Crawler access, schema, entity consistency, citation sources and page content are checked, then each gap is traced to the cause most likely behind it.

  5. 05

Days 9 to 10Report and walkthrough

A 60-minute call where we go through the findings and agree the order of fixes, so nothing in the report needs decoding later.

Your time: about two hours in total. One intake call, one prompt-list review and one walkthrough.

Who It's For

Is an AI Visibility Audit Right for Your Business?

It pays off most where buyers research before they reach out, and where a wrong answer from an AI tool costs you a deal.

  • B2B Companies in IT, SaaS, Manufacturing and Logistics

Your buyers shortlist vendors through AI long before they book a sales call.

  • E-commerce and D2C Brands

Your products now get compared, ranked and recommended by AI shopping assistants.

  • Real Estate Agencies, Title Companies and Local Service Firms

You need to know who AI recommends when someone asks about your area.

  • Healthcare, Finance, Insurance and Legal Businesses

An inaccurate AI answer about you carries real trust and compliance risk.

  • Marketing Leads Planning AEO or GEO Budgets

You need a clean baseline before committing spend, and a way to show later what actually moved.

  • Brands With Steady Rankings and Falling Clicks

Your positions hold, but AI answers are taking the clicks above them.

Not the right fit yet if:

  • Your site is brand new or not properly indexed. A technical SEO pass comes first, and I'll tell you that before you pay for anything.
  • You serve a very small local radius where people rarely ask AI for recommendations.
  • You want a guaranteed citation. No one can honestly promise that.
Straight Talk

What an Honest AI Visibility Audit Can and Can't Promise

AI answers are probabilistic. The same prompt can return a different answer an hour later, from another city or after a quiet model update. Any audit that ignores this is selling certainty it doesn't have.

What the audit does

  • Records what each platform said, on a stated date and from a stated location, with screenshots as proof
  • Repeats the prompts that matter most, so patterns stand apart from one-off noise
  • Ranks every fix by how likely it is to change what models say about you

What it won't do

  • Promise a citation or a set position inside any AI answer
  • Hand you a single "AI score" that hides how the number was built
  • Recommend mass-produced AI pages written to chase prompts, which tend to drag down the site you already have
  • Suggest planting reviews, Reddit posts or Wikipedia edits. They get removed, and they weaken the trust signals models rely on
Why Me

Why Work With Me on Your AI Citation Audit

One specialist who runs the tests, reads every answer and writes the fixes, with a decade of search work behind each call.

Every finding in the report comes with the screenshot that proves it.

I test on my own work first

More than 500 pages I've written or optimized are cited in Google AI Overviews, and my own site goes through the same prompt testing I run for clients. I don't recommend anything I haven't watched work on a live page.

I've seen the problem from several sides

Ten years and 150+ projects across B2B AI, web hosting, real estate, travel and e-commerce. That includes content operations for Pinnasys, an AI development company and Anthropic Claude Service Partner; a platform and NAP consistency audit for HostSailor; local search work for Discover South Florida and Chicago Title; and running Worth Having Products, my own D2C brand on Amazon, Flipkart and its own store.

My recommendations come with the how

I write the content, build the schema and handle the technical SEO myself, so every fix in your roadmap is written by someone who has to make it work. You won't find a line like "improve your E-E-A-T" with nothing underneath it.

You deal with me directly

No account manager in the middle and no junior analyst running prompts. The person who tests your brand is the person who walks you through what it means.

FAQ

AI Visibility Audit FAQs

Straight answers to what people usually ask before an audit starts.

What does an AI visibility audit include?

It includes a buyer-intent prompt set, testing across six AI platforms, competitor share of voice, a brand accuracy check, citation source mapping, an AI crawler and technical review, a schema and entity review, and a content extractability check. You receive a scorecard, an evidence library and a ranked fix roadmap.

How is an AI citation audit different from a regular SEO audit?

An SEO audit checks whether search engines can crawl, index and rank your pages. An AI citation audit checks whether AI platforms name your brand and link your pages when they answer questions. The two overlap on technical health and structured data, but an AI audit also measures mentions, sources and accuracy, which no rank tracker reports.

Which AI platforms do you test?

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews. If your buyers lean on another assistant or a regional platform, it can be added to the set.

How long does an AI search visibility audit take?

Seven to ten working days from the intake call to the walkthrough. Your involvement is roughly two hours: one intake call, one prompt-list review and one walkthrough.

How much does an AI visibility audit cost?

The price depends on how many prompts, competitors and markets are in scope. After a short intake call, I send a fixed quote with the scope and timeline spelled out, before any work begins.

Can I check my brand's AI visibility myself?

Yes, for a rough first look. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity five questions your buyers would ask, and note who gets named and which sites get linked. Keep in mind that one answer is one sample, and a spot check won't show competitor baselines or the reasons behind what you see.

Why does ChatGPT mention my competitors but not my brand?

Usually because competitors appear on more of the third-party pages models draw from, their details are more consistent across the web, or their pages answer the question more directly. Sometimes the cause is technical, such as a firewall blocking AI crawlers. The audit finds which of these applies to you.

Does an llms.txt file improve AI visibility?

It can help models find your key pages, and it's cheap to set up, so it's part of the review. It won't make up for blocked crawlers, inconsistent brand details or content that never answers the question. Treat it as housekeeping, not a strategy.

Will the audit show how much traffic AI sends me?

Partly. GA4 shows referral visits from sites like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai, and Bing's AI Performance report shows Copilot citations. Most platforms don't share impression data yet, which is why the audit relies on direct prompt testing to fill the gap.

How often should I repeat an AI visibility audit?

Every quarter is a sensible rhythm, plus after a site migration, a rebrand or a major model release. Brands that want month-by-month tracking usually move to the AI Optimization Specialist retainer.

Do you implement the fixes?

I can. The roadmap is written so your developer and writers can act on it alone, but many clients hand the work to me through AEO, GEO or content engagements.
