The AI Optimization Specialist Who Keeps Your Brand Cited
Getting cited by ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews is a project. Staying cited is a job, because the sources these engines pick change every few days. I take on that job every month: tracking where your brand appears in AI answers, working out why it moved, and fixing the content, code and off-site signals behind it.
- 500+ pages cited in AI Overviews
- 10+ years in search and content
- 1 point of contact, no account managers
A one-off audit would have caught week 1 or week 6. A retainer catches both and acts on the second.
Illustrative example, not client data.

What Does an AI Optimization Specialist Do?
An AI optimization specialist keeps a brand visible inside AI-generated answers over time. The work runs as a monthly cycle: test the questions buyers ask across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI features, find out why citations were won or lost, then fix the technical, content and authority signals behind each change.
The other services on this site are built to get you into AI answers. This one keeps you there. It treats AI search optimization as an operating function with a calendar, an owner and a report, rather than a deliverable that gets signed off and filed. Some people call it AIO. The label matters far less than the cadence.
In practice, I join your team as the person responsible for one question: when a buyer asks an AI engine about your category, does your brand come up, and is it described correctly?
Why AI Search Visibility Doesn't Stay Put
AI citations move much faster than organic rankings ever did. Three separate studies point the same way.
Average time between changes to a Google AI Overview. From one check to the next, 45.5% of the cited sources were entirely new.
Source: AhrefsShare of AI Overview rankings that changed within two to three months, a higher churn rate than classic organic results over the same period.
Source: Authoritas via Search Engine LandShare of ChatGPT's cited sources replaced from one week to the next. Google AI Mode swapped out 56% over the same window.
Source: SISTRIXThe answer stays the same. The sources it credits keep rotating.
The Ahrefs study found that the core message of an AI Overview rarely changes. The engine keeps saying roughly the same thing and swaps out who it credits for saying it.
That rotation is where an AI optimization specialist earns the fee. A brand that is checked once a quarter cannot tell whether it is being rotated out for a week or replaced for good.
- Model updates change how an engine weighs recency, depth or source type.
- Competitors publish a sharper page on the exact question you used to own.
- Third-party lists get refreshed, and a review site or roundup that cited you drops your name.
- Your own site changes. A redesign strips schema, a robots.txt edit blocks a crawler, or key copy moves behind JavaScript. This is the most common cause and the most avoidable. It rarely shows up in a traffic report straight away, yet it can quietly take a page out of AI answers.
Drift, Decline or a Model Update: Reading AI Visibility Correctly
Most wasted effort in AI optimization comes from reacting to the wrong signal. A brand sees one prompt drop, rewrites a page and makes things worse. Before changing anything, I sort every movement into one of five patterns.
| Pattern | What it looks like in the data | What I do about it |
|---|---|---|
| Normal driftWatch | Citations swap in and out on scattered prompts while your monthly share holds steady | Log it and leave the pages alone. Rewriting in response to noise often loses ground you already had. |
| Genuine declineAct this cycle | Share falls on a cluster of related prompts across three or more weekly runs, and one competitor keeps taking the slot | Compare the winning passage with yours line by line, then add the content, evidence and entity signals yours is missing. |
| Model or engine updateRe-baseline | Many unrelated prompts move at once on a single engine while the others stay flat | Re-baseline that engine and study what the new version favors before touching a page. |
| Technical breakFix now | Citations drop on every engine for one section of the site in the same week | Check crawler access, robots.txt, rendering and schema output. The cause is usually a recent deploy. |
| MisrepresentationFix now | You're named in the answer but described wrongly: old pricing, a retired product, the wrong location | Correct the pages and third-party profiles the engine draws from, then re-test until the description is right. |
This sorting step is the difference between real AI visibility monitoring and a folder of screenshots.
AI Optimization Services Included Every Month
The retainer covers the full stack behind AI visibility: technical access, on-page content, structured data and off-site authority. I make the changes myself where I have access, or hand your developer a spec precise enough to ship without a meeting.
Prompt Panel Tracking Across AI Engines
We build a fixed panel of the questions your buyers really ask: category searches, comparisons, "best X for Y" prompts and the follow-ups that come next. I run it on a schedule across every engine that matters to you and log each result with its date.
AI Citation Tracking and Share of Voice
Every run records whether you were cited, named without a link, which page was used and which competitors appeared in your place. Within a few months, you have the clearest picture available of who owns the AI answer in your category.
Content Refresh and Passage-Level Edits
Most gains come from small, precise edits to pages that already exist: updated figures, the answer moved into the first two sentences, a comparison table added, stale claims cut, and the gaps a competitor's cited passage covers closed.
Schema, Structured Data and llms.txt Upkeep
Schema breaks quietly when themes, plugins or templates change. I check that your Organization, Person, Service, Product and FAQPage markup still outputs correctly, extend it to new pages, and keep your llms.txt current if you use one.
Technical AI Accessibility Checks
Crawler access for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended, plus rendering and canonicals. Details matter: blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews, so one robots.txt edit can do something very different from what a team expects.
Entity and Brand Consistency Monitoring
AI engines trust brands they can describe consistently. I keep your company description, founders, services, locations and key facts aligned across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories, author pages and Wikidata where you qualify.
Off-Site Mentions and Authority Signals
For each important prompt, I identify the third-party pages the engines keep citing: industry lists, review platforms, Reddit threads, trade publications. Then we work out a realistic way to earn a place there. I don't buy links.
Model Update Response
When a major engine ships a new model or changes how it cites sources, I re-run the affected part of your panel straight away, compare it with the baseline and reset priorities before the next monthly cycle starts.
How a Month of AI Optimization Works
The retainer runs on a fixed rhythm, so you always know what's happening this week and what you'll receive at the end of the month.
- 00Before month one
Set the Baseline
We agree on the prompt panel, the competitors to watch and the engines to weight most heavily. I set up access to your CMS, analytics and Search Console and run the first full sweep. If you haven't had an audit, a lighter version of it happens here.
- 01Week 1
Measure
Run the full prompt panel across every tracked engine. Record citations, unlinked mentions, the pages used and the competitors present.
- 02Week 2
Diagnose
Sort every change into drift, decline, update, technical break or misrepresentation, and pick the handful of fixes worth making this month.
- 03Week 3
Ship
Make the content edits, schema changes and technical fixes myself, or brief your developer and writers with exact specs.
- 04Week 4
Report and Plan
You get a written report covering what moved, which pattern it fits, what I changed and what comes next, followed by a strategy call. It's written for a founder or marketing lead, not for another SEO.
If an engine pushes a major update or your citations fall sharply on a cluster of prompts, you hear from me that week, not at month end.
AI Search Platforms I Optimize For
Each engine finds and credits sources in its own way, so one tactic rarely works everywhere. Effort is weighted toward the engines your buyers actually use, which we confirm during the baseline.
| Platform | How it tends to pick sources | Where I focus |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews & AI Mode | Built on Google's own index. AI Mode breaks a question into many related sub-searches. | Organic foundations, clear passages, and coverage of the follow-up questions a buyer asks next |
| ChatGPT | Searches the web for current or comparative questions, with heavy week-to-week source churn | Presence across the third-party sources it reads, consistent entity facts, OAI-SearchBot access |
| Perplexity | Retrieves live pages and shows numbered citations on almost every answer | Fresh, specific, well-sourced pages. Its visible citations also make it the easiest engine to diagnose. |
| Gemini | Draws on Google's index and Knowledge Graph | Entity data, Google Business Profile, schema and topical depth |
| Claude | Uses web search when enabled and cites the pages it relied on | In-depth, research-grade pages that answer evaluation-stage questions thoroughly |
| Microsoft Copilot | Grounded in Bing's index | Bing Webmaster Tools, IndexNow and clean Bing indexing, which many teams never check |
AI Optimization Specialist vs SEO Agency vs In-House Team
Each option has its place. The right choice depends on how much of your pipeline now starts inside an AI answer.
| Dedicated AI optimization specialist | Traditional SEO agency | In-house marketing team | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Citations and accuracy inside AI answers, built on SEO foundations | Rankings, traffic and backlinks | Campaigns, brand and content across many channels |
| AI citation tracking | The core of the work, run on a fixed prompt panel | Often an add-on report, if offered | Usually ad hoc, when someone has time |
| Response to model updates | Re-tests the affected prompts the same week | Depends on the agency's AI capability | Rarely tracked |
| Who does the work | The specialist you hired | Often a junior team behind an account manager | Generalists balancing other priorities |
| Implementation | Edits content and schema directly, or briefs developers with exact specs | Varies; many deliver recommendations only | Has the access, may lack AI search knowledge |
| Best for | Brands whose buyers research and shortlist through AI | Brands where classic search traffic is still the main goal | Brands with broad marketing needs and a strong writing bench |
You don't need to replace your agency or internal team. I plug into what's already there and own the AI layer, so nobody's work is duplicated.
Who This AI Optimization Retainer Is Built For
The retainer pays off fastest where a missing or wrong AI answer has a direct cost: a lost shortlist, a lost sale or a compliance problem.
Brands That Have Already Invested in AEO or GEO
You paid for the rewrites, the schema and the entity work, and you started appearing in AI answers. Without someone watching, those gains fade as competitors catch up and engines change. The retainer protects that investment and keeps building on it.
Marketing Teams Without an AI Search Specialist
Your team writes well and runs campaigns, but nobody owns AI visibility day to day. Hiring a full-time specialist in a field this new is expensive and hard to get right. A retainer gives you that expertise alongside the people you already have.
B2B Companies Whose Buyers Shortlist Through AI
When a procurement lead asks ChatGPT for the top providers in your category, the shortlist often forms before anyone visits your site. For B2B AI, IT, logistics and manufacturing brands, that first answer is now part of the sales cycle.
E-commerce Brands Facing AI Shopping Assistants
Shopping assistants compare products, read reviews and summarize specs before a customer reaches your store. Product data, reviews and category pages need regular attention to stay in those comparisons, especially around launches and price changes.
Real Estate and Local Service Brands
Buyers now ask AI about neighborhoods, agents and local providers before they call anyone. Location facts, reviews and Google Business Profile details drift easily, and a single outdated detail can send a lead to a competitor.
Brands in Regulated Industries Where Accuracy Matters
In healthcare, finance, insurance and legal, an AI engine quoting an outdated rate or a discontinued policy is more than an inconvenience. Monthly accuracy checks catch misrepresentation early, and corrections go to the sources the engine is drawing from.
Is an AI Optimization Retainer Right for You?
A monthly retainer works best once there is something to protect. If you're not there yet, I'll point you to the right starting service on the first call.
A good fit if
- Your site has indexed pages that already rank or get cited somewhere
- Buyers in your category research or compare options through AI tools
- You can give access to your CMS, analytics and Search Console, or a developer who acts on specs
- You want one accountable person tracking AI visibility every month
Probably not the right start if
- Your site is new or thin on content. Start with LLM-Native Content or AEO, then move to the retainer.
- You only want a one-time snapshot. The AI Visibility & Citation Audit covers that.
- You need guaranteed citations. Nobody controls what a language model says. I can improve your odds and prove the movement, nothing more.
- Nobody can grant access. The work depends on making changes, not only recommending them.
Why Work With Me as Your AI Optimization Specialist
AI optimization is full of recycled checklists. What works here is judgment about which signal matters for your brand this month, and the hands-on skill to act on it.
A Strategy Built Around Your Prompts, Not a Checklist
Add FAQ schema, write an llms.txt file, publish more listicles. Some of that helps some brands some of the time. What works for a title insurance company will not work for a sportswear store or an AI development firm, so every plan starts from your buyers' prompts, your competitors and your current citations.
Search, Content and Code in One Seat
After a decade in SEO and content, I can read a robots.txt file, fix a schema error and rewrite the paragraph that should be cited, all in the same afternoon. You don't pay for a strategist to brief a writer who then briefs a developer.
I Run This on My Own Brands First
I operate my own D2C brand, Worth Having Products, and this website is my working lab for AI citations. New tactics get tested on properties I own before they go anywhere near a client's pages.
Direct Access, Full Context
You work with me, not a rotating account manager. The person who reads your data is the person who makes the change and the person on your monthly call, so nothing gets lost in a handoff.
Reporting That Tells You the Truth
If citations drop, the report says so and explains which pattern it fits. I separate normal drift from real decline and won't claim credit for movement the data can't support.

What Does an AI Optimization Specialist Do Day to Day?
An AI optimization specialist tests how AI engines answer the questions your buyers ask, records whether your brand is cited or named, and fixes the reasons behind any change. Day to day, that means running prompt panels, editing content and schema, checking crawler access, correcting brand information across the web and reporting on what moved.
How Is an AI Optimization Specialist Different From an SEO Specialist?
An SEO specialist works to rank pages in search results. An AI optimization specialist works to get your brand cited and described correctly inside AI-generated answers, which are chosen differently and change far more often. Strong SEO remains the foundation, which is why I handle both instead of treating AI search as a separate channel.
Why Does AI Search Optimization Need to Be Ongoing?
The sources AI engines cite rotate constantly. Ahrefs found that Google's AI Overviews change every 2.15 days on average, with almost half the citations replaced between checks. Model updates, competitor content and changes on your own site all shift visibility, so a one-time fix starts losing value within weeks.
Do I Need an AI Visibility Audit Before Starting the Retainer?
No. If you haven't had one, a lighter version of the audit is built into the baseline stage. If you have, I use its findings as the starting point and go straight to building the prompt panel.
Which AI Platforms Do You Track?
ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot. Effort is weighted toward the engines your buyers use most, which we agree on at the start and review as usage shifts.
How Soon Will I See Changes in AI Citations?
Technical fixes and corrections to brand information can show up within a few weeks. Content refreshes usually take one to three monthly cycles to show a clear trend. Authority built through third-party mentions takes longest, typically several months, but it also lasts longest.
Can You Guarantee My Brand Will Be Cited by ChatGPT or AI Overviews?
No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. AI engines decide what to cite, and their answers vary from run to run. What I can do is strengthen the signals those engines rely on, measure your citation rate consistently and show you exactly what changed.
Will You Work With My Existing SEO Agency or Developers?
Yes. I own the AI visibility layer and coordinate with whoever handles your SEO, content or development. Developers get exact specs, writers get clear briefs, and agencies get a summary of what I'm changing so work doesn't overlap.
How Much Does an AI Optimization Specialist Cost?
The retainer is a fixed monthly fee based on the size of your prompt panel, the number of engines tracked and how much implementation I handle directly. After a free strategy call, I send a written proposal with the scope and monthly fee spelled out.
Is There a Minimum Commitment?
AI visibility trends take a few monthly cycles to read clearly, so I recommend planning for at least three months. That gives the work enough time to show results before you decide whether to continue. The exact terms are set out in your proposal.
Keep the AI Visibility You've Already Earned
Every week your brand is missing from an AI answer, a competitor gets the introduction instead. Book a free strategy call and we'll run a few of your most important buyer prompts together, see who's being cited today, and work out whether a retainer makes sense for you yet.
